DMCA

During past semesters SUNY New Paltz could not easily identify users accused of copyright violations, but as of this past academic year (2007-2008), all copyright infringement notices will be acted upon. We strongly urge students to familiarize themselves with the information on this site, to minimize the risks of illegal activity and disruption of computer services.

For the details of our policy, see New Paltz DMCA Policy

For Frequently Asked Questions about File Sharing and our DMCA Policy, see DMCA FAQ

The sharing of copyrighted materials at New Paltz is prohibited (most common types are music & movies).
Here is an “at-a-glance” view of the consequences of file sharing.

  • Legal Consequences
    • All infringements are recorded and New Paltz is required by law to offer them as evidence, should any legal proceedings ensue.
    • This means that even if you don’t get “caught”, you are still developing a record of illegal activity.

  • New Paltz Consequences
    • Three Strike Policy
      • 1st strike - Lose Internet connection (up to 10 days)
      • 2nd strike - Lose Internet connection & Student Affairs for disciplinary action
      • 3rd strike - Permanently lose Internet & Student Affairs for disciplinary action
    • Strikes do not go away.
    • Disciplinary action and probation become part of students records.
    • Students are held responsible for the use of their SUNY ID and NPCUID (includes all computer access and services).
